Building an operational framework for agri-environmental actions in Dalmatian islands

In cooperation with the Local Action Group ”LAG 5” and National Park Mljet, as a follow up of the Horizon 2020 project ”High Nature Value Farming: learning innovation and knowledge”  MIRO is launching the creation of an operational framework for agri-environmental actions, with the methodological support of SupAgro Montpellier and Göttingen University.

The objective of this operational framework is to specify the agro-environmental baseline for the islands of Mljet, Korčula as well as for the peninsula of Pelješac. It will be used to establish a portfolio of different projects, involve appropriate partners and expertise and mobilize a wider range of instruments and cooperation formats to address the needs and bottle-necks of agri-environmental strategies. This framework will ensure the coherency and the synergies of agri-environmental actions at different scales: territorial, value-chains, and individual/business.

To establish this operational framework field work and knowledge based expertise is needed in order to provide measurable elements as well as qualitative and quantitative indicators that are currently missing: (1) on the agri-environmental dynamics at landscape scale (dynamics of habitats, vegetation, species); (2) on the functioning of the agrarian systems (farming systems economic and environmental viability) and value-chains (mainly olives, wine and honey); (3) on the mobilization capacity and impact of existing EU tools (AEM, CAP payments, etc.) on HNV farming.
